Overtrousers for farm work
Livestock, muck, machinery, hedges and weather that doesn't care what jobs need doing. Farm overtrousers need to be tough first and clever second.
What farm work demands
Farm waterproofs face abrasion from gates, hurdles and hedges, constant contact with muck, slurry and animals, and long hours outdoors in every season. They get kneeled in, leaned against, snagged and hosed down. And unlike leisure kit, they get worn every day. That changes the priorities: durability, easy cleaning and comfort over a long day matter more than weight or pack size.

Many farmers own both: a coated bib-and-brace for the parlour and yard, and a breathable pair for fieldwork and walking stock.
Why bib-and-brace is popular
When you bend over a trough or crouch to check a ewe, ordinary waist-height trousers gap at the back and let rain and muck in. Bib-and-brace overtrousers come up over the chest and are held by braces, so there is no gap and nothing to keep hitching up. They pair well with a waterproof jacket or smock over the top.
Features that matter
- Welded or fully taped seams that stand up to hosing down.
- Reinforced knees and seat for kneeling and sitting on bales or quad seats.
- Wide leg openings to go over wellies. Wear them outside the welly, never tucked in, or water and slurry runs straight into your boots.
- Colour: darker colours hide muck; if you work near roads or moving machinery, consider hi-vis options (see work & hi-vis).
- A snug but non-flappy leg near machinery with moving parts: loose fabric and PTO shafts don't mix.
Care on the farm
Hose muck off before it dries, and rinse off anything acidic or oily (slurry, silage effluent, diesel) promptly, because it degrades coatings. Hang to dry away from direct heat: drying PVC next to a stove or on an Aga rail can make it brittle. Breathable trousers benefit from a proper wash and reproof now and again: see care & reproofing.
